The check engine light is part of a very intricate monitoring system for your engine. The light is controlled by an onboard computer system referred to as the ECM. The Electronic Control Module (ECM) system constantly monitors diagnostic functions relating to emissions, engine efficiency, and fuel efficiency, to mention but a few. The ECM will turn the check engine light on when a problem is identified within one of these systems. So if your check engine light comes, drive gently to avoid excess strain on the engine, note anything unusual like overheating or low oil pressure, and take your vehicle to Dan's Audi Repair, a trusted professional in New Jersey, for a quick inspection of the problem.     .

What Dan's customers say about our Audi and Volkswagen repair services.

Dan,
When my check engine came on I was literally in panic mode. I wasn't sure what to do. Thanks for looking at it for me, fixing the small problem, and doing it fast. I thought my car would be there for a couple days. You had my car back to me in less than 2 hours, in time to get the kids from school. That was a nice surprise. Everything I've heard about you is true. I hope I don't have to see you soon, but I know where to find a good mechanic thanks to you.

The check engine light means its time for Dan's Audi repair.

The check engine light plays a vital role in alerting you to possible problems with your Audi or Volkswagen vehicle. The role of the check engine light in the over-all health of your vehicle is often misunderstood. The light may come on for a seemingly insignificant reason, or it may turn on to alert you to a major operating issue that requires immediate attention by a trained Audi or Volkswagen repair technician.

All modern vehicles have an onboard computer, referred to as an ECM, or Electronic Control Module. The purpose of the ECM is to regulate the various engine functions under different driving conditions so the engine performs at its greatest efficiency with the least amount of
emissions. In light of the strict emission standards currently in effect, maintaining top performance with the least amount of emissions is not an easy task. The ECM monitors engine functions constantly and with great precision while simultaneously making adjustments to allow for various operating factors such as speed, engine temperature, cargo load, gasoline quality, road conditions, and ambient air temperature, to mention just a few.

The check engine light, when on, is a warning mechanism indicating that one of the various systems it is monitoring is experiencing failure. The check engine light is not always an indication of major failure, but it should never be ignored.

Modern Volkswagen and Audi vehicles operate on a highly advanced electronic platform. Volkswagen and Audi engines have an extremely large number of electronic sensors and specifically engineered devices that assist the ECM in monitoring all vehicle related emission systems. When the ECM diagnostics detect any failure with any emissions-related system or component, the check engine light is engaged and the 'trouble code' is immediately stored in the memory of the device for future diagnosis by the repair technician. The check engine light is your car telling you that it needs a little help from a qualified repair facility.

The 'trouble code' that is contained in the memory of the ECM must be extracted from the device with a scanner that plugs into the cars computer. The technician, after extracting the code, will cross-reference it with a list of several hundred Audi or Volkswagen manufacturer
provided error codes to determine what system is in distress. Once armed with this information, the technician can determine, after further testing, which engine parameter is operating out of the range of allowed tolerances. With the majority of the diagnostics in place, a qualified Audi or Volkswagen technician can then determine the exact part that needs to be replaced or the specific repair task that needs to be performed to correct the issue.      .
